Traits of A Good Web Hosting Company
In the electronic era, all businesses recognize the importance of establishing an online presence. If you are one of them, you will need to build a good website to attract customers. This requires a reliable and affordable web host to support your online business.
You will find a long list of web hosts, all claiming to be the best. However, you need to consider various factors before you make a choice.
Some of the most important qualities of a good web hosting company are:
Disk space
You must keep in mind your current as well as future plans. If you want to expand your website with time, there will need for a flexible web hosting plan. Avoid hosts which provide a standard package with fixed components. Go for a web host which offers at least 1 GB disk space.
Unlimited Features
If your site has been running for some time, you may want to add email accounts, sub domains and new scripts and programs. Bandwidth should be such that allows you to upload a large amount of files and databases without affecting the speed of connectivity of the website.
When you are running an online business, you can contact a large number of people in one go. This makes it necessary for you to have a large amount of emails which can be sent out to customers. Before you choose a web hosting company, verify the number of emails allowed to be sent out per hour.
Payment plan
Web hosting plans may be monthly, semi-annually or annually. Usually, monthly plans are much costlier than yearly plans. There is another new alternative known as “Lifetime Web Hosting” in which you just have to pay a hosting fees at the beginning and never again.
Technology
Select a web host which keeps updated technological tools and applications. This can help you in finding effective tools to make your website interactive and upgrade it easily, as and when required.
Technical support
The web hosting provider must assure continuous technical support for your website. There is nothing worse than users visiting a malfunctioning website and then switching to your competitors.
99% Uptime
A web host providing less than 99% uptime is not worth investing your money in. you can find many good web hosts who will offer upto 99.9% uptime. So you must check the amount of uptime guaranteed by the web host before taking a package from them.
If you keep these things in mind, you can find a good web hosting plan to make your online business efficient and successful.

Web Hosting Tips: Where To Host Your Website?
Before deciding upon the web hosting package for your website, you must be sure about the basis of such decision; be it the web hosting features or the price of the chosen plan. Of course, the best option would be a combination of both these factors.
New website owners are attracted by free web hosting providers. However, you should remember that such packages may not provide you much benefit. There is lack of flexibility, good applications and effective security systems. Instead of getting advantages of no cost, you may end up with minimal features and an unsuccessful website.
A better option is to go for paid web hosting. These can be of different types such as:
Budget web hosting: these are available at about $1 per month. Such plans may offer a wide range of services but may not be actually available to you. This may be suitable for personal websites only. For a more professional website, you will need a more reliable and higher priced web hosting plan.
Medium web hosting: these web hosting packages are available for about $5-$10 every month. These will be inclusive of features like shopping cart software, email accounts, domain names and sub domain names, security mechanisms like SSL encryption, etc. the bandwidth and disk space is also adequate for a reasonable amount of traffic. This proves to be a fairly reliable and secure option for most websites. However, you may have to shift to an upgraded plan if your website is getting heavy customer traffic and file uploading.
High end web hosting: this kind of web hosting is used by popular websites which get a large amount of web traffic every day and have highly interactive and technically advanced websites. The web hosting providers ensure up-to-date applications and 100% uptime to keep the websites up and running at all times. These web hosting plans may be priced at around $50 and above. This is a very reliable, secure and effective web hosting alternative. You can be assured of prompt technical and customer support, high-end applications and flexibility in bandwidth and server space.
You may go for dedicated web hosting or even colocated hosting if your website requires complete server support. This will cost you much more than the shared hosting plans, so you must carry out a cost-benefit analysis before making a decision.
Remember that in web hosting, you will get what you pay for. Assess your needs and objectives for the website as well as your budget before going for a web hosting plan. Search for and compare different web hosting companies to find the right host for your website.

Web Hosting For Profit
The web hosting business has really expanded over the years, and now choosing the right web host has proven to be quite a task. Selecting the right web hosting package is very crucial. If you end up choosing the wrong host you can easily end up losing a lot of money. To avoid this from happening there are a few things that you will need to consider when you are choosing a web host.
Choose only what you need
Once you have created your website, you would know what exactly your website needs. The next step would be for you to choose a web host that will cater to all the needs of your website. Don’t just think that because a package costs a lot of money, that it will take care of all your needs. Even the high cost web hosts can fall short of providing you with what you need in your website. Choose a web host that will save you money in the future.
Your web host is not your asset
When you are launching your website, you can never be sure of how many visitors you will receive every single day. In the beginning limit your space to certain specific space and its bandwidth. A package that comes with 1GB of space and 5GB of bandwidth would be sufficient to start with. Just keep an eye on the amount of traffic that your website will receive so that once it reaches 75% of your allowable bandwidth, you will know that it is time to look for another web host.
Optimize your web space
If you are hosting a simple website or a blog, then you will not require a lot of web space. If your initial plan is to store lots of images, videos and numerous websites, then you would then require huge web space. Make that the package will allow you to host as many websites as possible as well as your domain names.
Paying extra doesn’t mean that you will lose
There are some web hosting companies that can make you sign a contract for a year and even offer you a discount to make it more appealing. Don’t go for this kind of offer. Try to pay by monthly payments so that you can see if the package will meet all your needs. If they are not able to do that, then you will be free to switch hosts at any time, since there will be no contract binding you.
Choose the right control panel
Each control panel comes with its own functions and abilities, so only select what suits you. Some control panels are even customized by the web host themselves. If you select a wrong control panel, maintaining your website will become quite difficult. It would be wise to first try out the functions of each control panel before proceeding to make payment.

Importance of Storing Backups
Having a backup of your data and important files is essential since you never know when your system would stop working or start giving you problems. Data backup is very simple to do and there are many ways of data backup.
Particular data files and folder
You may wish to make regular backup of only the particular files that you are using on your hosting server, for example the database sql file. There are three major reasons for this.
- A backup of a smaller set of data can be done quickly.
- You may not have right to have a backup of complete website.
- The complete back up is not feasible on daily basis.
Full Server Backup
Full server back ups are taken so as to keep a regular back up of all the files on the server. These are mostly done by the web hosting company to protect any data of the client from getting lost. Certain companies, mainly big corporate, also keep a regular back up of all the server files locally. The backups are generally done through third party tools and scripts.
While medium to small companies create a data backup through manual downloading of necessary files and folders. Third party tools like R1Backups are also generally employed to create a back up. Websites control panel also have option of generating and downloading backups in tar.gz format.
Keeping a backup of data is very important specially for the regularly upgrading database. In event of any server failure, you should be able to quickly get your web application up so that users do not face any trouble and you do not lose your important clients/ customers.

Difference Between Shared and VPS Server
Initially, most of the start up businesses and web-site owners choose to start with the shared hosting solution. It makes sense as it is economical and satisfies most of their initial needs. It is a great start for those people who do not require many resources and the authority provided by more advanced service providers, at first. However, most businesses and website owners eventually start to use power and resources not provided by shared hosting and that is when Virtual Private Server hosting comes in to need. The advancement from a shared to VPS hosting is not only expensive and time consuming but also a true enhancement over the shared hosting that was used earlier.
Shared hosting server shares the similar email and mail servers. Taking into account the number of clients, these web servers have to run hundreds of thousands of emails being received and sent that causes reliability and security problems. It is not difficult to inundate such shared servers and cause overflow that hampers the working of all web-sites functioning on that server. VPS hosting will give a exclusive email and IP address to every client server and because every Virtual Private Server is an independent partition of server, it is more hard to interrupt its work. Your web-site will still keep running if another server is hacked. In turn this offers more reliability for every server account as well as better security.
A Virtual Private Server assigns required resources to every client individually as per the requirements of the user. There is always a least amount dedicated to every virtual private server and therefore your server is guaranteed to work at a steady quality. Therefore as compared to shared web hosting, Virtual Private Server offers a lot more power and reliability. So if you are planning to shift from shared to virtual server it is important that you know the difference between the two.

Domain Registration And Renewal
Even if domain renewal appears to be a very small part of the domain registration process, it is worth mentioning and understanding. When you fail to renew the domain name of your website within fixed time, it becomes available to others. This implies that you may end losing customers and brand value created over a period of time.
Early Renewal
Good domain registration companies always recommend website owners to renew their domain name as early as possible. You will also get a reminder of the expiration date of the domain by the registrar. For multiple domain names, it is best to maintain a list of all domains and their specific expiration dates. Usually, you can log into a domain name account for renewal and payment of domain registration fees.
Longer Duration Domains
If you register a domain for a longer period of time, you can save money on domain registration as well as domain renewal. Many domain registrars will offer up to 10-year registration at a good discount. This allows you to save more in the long run and removes the headache of annual domain renewals as well.
Domain Re-evaluation
Before renewing your domain name, you must re-evaluate the situation of your website. It may have to be shifted to a new hosting company for greater flexibility and better customer service. You may also want to register another domain name to complement your main business site.
Automated Domain Renewals
Many domain registration companies allow website owners to get domain names renewed automatically. It will be charged against your credit card or according to your payment preference at the right time. However, you must check that your domain name gets renewed on time and there are no unnecessary costs.
When the time of domain renewal arrives, keep your account login and password ready. This is essential to access your domain name information. For security, choose a trustworthy registrar and keep your domain name details on a hard drive that is available to authorised individuals only.

Life Cycle Of Domain Registration
In most cases, domain registration begins with an idea for domain name, researching domain options and choosing a specific domain name before finally registering it. During domain registration, the life cycle of a domain name includes the following phases:
- Availability – A domain name is available under two circumstances. Either it has never been registered before or it has already expired.
- Active Domains – These include domains that are currently registered for a minimum of one year and a maximum of 10 years. When it is nearing the expiry of registration period, the registrar sends an email notification to the registrant. If not renewed within the fixed period, the domain becomes expired.
- Expired Domains – Normally, the expired domain names are held by the domain registration company for a period of 45 days but it can be longer or shorted depending on the terms of contract. At this stage, it is not possible to transfer the domain name to another registrar.
- Redemption – The website owner can re-register the domain within the redemption period, consisting of 30 days. Till this stage, the domain is not available to the public.
- Pending Delete – During these 5 days, the domain is still held by the registrar.
- Once the registry hold period is over, the domain name is open to registration by anyone.
When you opt for free or cheap domain registration, you may not even get notification of domain renewal or expiry. Hence, it is much better to opt for a registrar that charges a nominal amount for registration and renewal of domain name. Moreover, you must choose long term domain registration as it offers various benefits over the annual registration.
Some of these benefits include:
- Greater convenience in registering and renewing domain name as it has to be done once in a few years.
- Lesser cost of domain registration for multiple years as well as reduced need for paying renewal fees.
- In comparison to short term registration, long term registration is considered more secure and reliable.
- Customers take note of the longevity of domain registration while analyzing a website. A company with domain registered for long period of time is considered more trustworthy than one with a single year registration.
