How Do Web Servers Work?
There are plenty of web hosts available presenting wide varieties of paid or free web hosting plans. Linux hosting, dedicated servers, VPS hosting, windows hosting and several other hosting servers are available for customers at reasonable price. Primarily you are required to approach the right web hosting company that can satisfy all your hosting supplies. But before doing so you must estimate your hosting requirements. There are not many people who know about the working of hosting machines. Therefore, it is essential that you understand the hosting methodology before hosting your website on any server.
Web hosting is dependent on shared understanding between the client and the server host. Web servers exchange and store data with other machines. When client requests for the information, server gives him the accumulated information. There are some softwares that makes exchange of data viable from both sides. For instance browsers like Internet explorer or Netscape are needed on the client side.
Now it is a little more complicated on the server side, there are several options of software’s available which helps in transfer of data possible between server and the client through hypertext Transfer Protocol. HTTP works as a current communication protocol on the internet. It enables the exchange of data between the servers and the browsers. Server software can be selected according to your operating system. People usually prefer Apache web server for using Unix operating system. The process works like this
- Initially, URL is divided into number of path name, addresses, and protocol by the web browser.
- The domain name server (DNS) interprets the domain name that user has entered in its IP address. Domain names are chosen so as to make websites memorable.
- Now the browser will choose the protocol to use with. Whether to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol).
- A GET request is sent by the server to the web server so as to retrieve the given address.
- Browser now interprets the information provided in to HTML and exhibit results to be read by the user.
- Until the client browser leaves the website, the same process is repeated.
